AKRON — It’s a collection that’s hard to ignore – especially for Netflix lovers.
Joanna Wilson is a loyal and long-time subscriber of the streaming service. Since 2005, Wilson has been saving each envelope that Netflix/DVD.com sent her when she has requested a DVD through the mail.
Wilson said she noticed the envelopes had an unique texture, noting that it appeared the packaging was water resistant.
So she kept them. All of them.
" [I thought] because of the texture of the paper, this might make a cool craft project in the future," Wilson said. "Maybe I’ll save a few of them."
If you knew Wilson, the unique collection wouldn’t come as a surprise. She rented the DVDs to use as research while writing several books based on Christmas TV history.
Fast forward to about 13 years later: More than 1,500 envelopes have been collected and stored in a box.
But that may change.
Wilson reached out to Netflix to share her collection and was immediately asked a question that did not come as a surprise.
"They said ‘Why did you do this,’ a very reasonable question," Wilson said. "They asked me why in the world did I save all of them. So I said ‘I sort of dreamed I would make a dress for Halloween.'"
Wilson said Netflix, celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, has decided to sponsor the dress. Netflix confirmed the project to WKYC.
But Wilson is now in need of a designer. She’s looking for someone who would be willing to help design and create the dress in time for Halloween, possibly fashion students looking for a unique challenge.
For now, her collection will be stored away until it makes its debut on Halloween.
