Willy: Cleveland Metroparks Zoo's only male elephant

Willy is a 36-year-old African bull elephant.

Willy is a 36-year-old African bull elephant. He is the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo's only male elephant.

He came to the zoo from Disney's Animal Kingdom in Orlando, Florida in 2011.

Every day, zookeepers chop fresh produce, including carrots, apples and sweet potatoes, for Willy.

He also eats hay, grain and tree branches. The branches are cut fresh from the Horticulture Department. Willy's favorites are mulberry and bamboo.

Zookeepers recently discovered that Willy also enjoys peanut butter sandwiches. Those are a "special treat."

His food is put into balls, barrels and ropes to encourage Willy to think. Elephants are most content when they are using their brain.

Zookeepers try to change Willy's diet every two hours.

At the end of the night, zookeepers leave Willy 150 gallons of water. The water is usually gone in the morning.

And if you were wondering how Willy is weighed, it involves a truck scale.
