As part of the national "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over" campaign, the Ohio State Highway Patrol and other law enforcement agencies will be placing several OVI checkpoints across Northeast Ohio Friday night and early Saturday morning in an effort to get drunk drivers off the streets.
According to officials, there were more than 13,000 OVI-related car crashes in Ohio last year, resulting in 402 deaths and nearly 8,000 injuries. While the number of crashes was down from the previous year, the number of fatalities remained virtually unchanged.
