Former NBA All-Star and Cleveland-native Charles Oakley was arrested in Las Vegas on Sunday on suspicion of "adding to or reducing his wager on a gambling game after the outcome was known," the Nevada Gaming Control Board confirmed to USA TODAY Sports on Thursday.
Oakley, 54, was arrested by gaming control board enforcement agents at The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas, a luxury hotel and casino, at approximately 5:30 p.m.
The NGCB described Oakley's violation as an alleged attempt "to commit or attempt to commit a fraudulent act in a gaming establishment" but did not provide further details on what occurred.
Oakley was then booked into a Las Vegas jail without incident, according to the NGCB. A representative for the 19-year NBA veteran did not immediately reply to a request for comment from USA TODAY Sports.
TMZ first reported Oakley's arrest early Thursday morning.
The No. 9 overall pick in the 1985 NBA draft, Oakley spent the majority of his career with the New York Knicks but also played for the Chicago Bulls, Toronto Raptors, Washington Wizards and Houston Rockets. He averaged 9.7 points and 9.5 rebounds per game and now coaches in the Big 3 basketball league.
Oakley was previously arrested last year following an altercation at Madison Square Garden, but he was later cleared of charges as part of an agreement that, among other things, barred him from visiting the arena for a year. Oakley later sued Knicks owner James Dolan, Madison Square Garden and MSG Networks. The suit is still active in federal court.
