Fugitive Shawn Christy captured in Mansfield area

Christy had been wanted since June 19 for threats he made on Facebook against a Pennsylvania district attorney and even President Trump.

It was shortly after 4 p.m. Friday when the search for 27-year-old fugitive Shawn Christy finally ended.

"We found him hiding in a deep and treacherous ravine," U.S. Marshal Deputy Anne Murphy said.

Christy had been wanted since June 19 for threats he made on Facebook against a Pennsylvania district attorney and more.

"I promise I'll put a bullet in your head as soon as I put one in the head of President Donald J. Trump," Christy also wrote on Facebook, according to the U.S. Marshals.

"We took this very seriously," Murphy said. "Threats against the president, threats against the district attorney in PA and threats against law enforcement as well."

It wasn't a specific tip, but what the U.S. Marshals are calling a planned "slow methodical search of a one-mile area through woods, fields and ravines."

Aimee Strang told us she watched from her home on Crider Road as "a line of law enforcement" marched Christy right out through the soybean field across the street. She later shared photos she had taken exclusively with WKYC.

"He looked a little like his clothes were ripped and scratched but he wasn't limping or didn't seem to be injured in anyway," Strang recalled.

Strang says the spot where Christy was finally arrested is only a few miles from where he crashed his truck Sunday on I-71.

Friday, it was the concentrated, coordinated effort of more than a dozen agencies that paid off. Local police departments, county sheriff’s deputies, and Ohio state troopers were all bolstered by U.S. Marshals, FBI, Secret Service, and even the Border Patrol.

"When I say he actively hid, it was more than just trying to hide behind a car," Murphy said. "It was extensive, the time he took to hide from us and he was doing that since Sunday.

"Who knows how close he could have been for how long before they caught him," Strang wonders. "I could have been sleeping 200 yards away from where he had been sleeping the last few nights.

"I could tell he had a knife because I saw someone had an evidence bag. One police officer yelled to another I have the knife in here."

Murphy says it was a “large knife,” as well as a gun. Two weapons in the hands of this fugitive who law enforcement officers knew had threatened their lives as well.

No officers were injured. Murphy says Christy is expected to be in federal court on Monday.
