Richland County inmate mistakenly released arrested in Alabama

Authorities have also determined he had two accomplices.

MANSFIELD - An inmate who was mistakenly released from the Richland County Jail on Sept. 4 has been captured in Huntsville, Alabama.

Richland County Sheriff's Maj. Joe Masi confirmed that Cornelius Joseph Phillips was caught Tuesday.

"We are willing to extradite," Masi said Wednesday morning.

Phillips was mistakenly released from the jail around 5:30 p.m. Sept 4, according to the Richland County Sheriff's Office.

He was considered armed and dangerous, the sheriff's office said earlier.

"The suspect inmate devised a scheme to get released from the jail using another inmate's identity," Masi said earlier. "It's pretty extensive how it happened."

Video showed Phillips, 22, leaving the jail and heading south. From surveillance footage from a nearby building, Phillips is believed to have been picked up by a person driving a blue Hyundai Sonata.

Masi said two corrections officers and one sergeant have been placed on administrative leave out of the incident. He declined to release their names.

"It was due to these officers not following proper procedures that the system failed," he said.

He has ties to Mansfield, Alabama, and Georgia.

In addition, authorities have determined he had two accomplices, Masi said.

Dasia Crutcher, 23, identified as one of Phillips' accomplices, is wanted on a charge of complicity to escape. She has tries to Mansfield and Alabama. She was among last week's Richland County Most Wanted individuals sought by the U.S. Marshals.

She is 4 feet 6 inches and 105 pounds with black hair and brown eyes.
