Heidelberg University has a long history in Northeast Ohio.
The school will turn 168 years old this November. In fact, 10 buildings on its Tiffin campus are listed on the National Register for historic places.
Here are some other facts you may not know:
- Heidelberg’s PlusOneAdvantage Free MBA program offers all eligible students the opportunity to earn an MBA in one year, tuition-free. Business skills help all majors stand out and become more marketable. Any student who completes a bachelor’s degree in any major at Heidelberg in four years with at least a 3.0 GPA is eligible to stay and earn an MBA tuition-free.
- The HYPE Career Ready® program brings big-name speakers to campus six times a year to inspire students and help them prepare for life after college. In the first two years of HYPE, Heidelberg has welcomed the likes of Bill Nye “the Science Guy,” Shark Tank’s Daymond John, astronaut Jim Lovell, Olympic gold medalist Shawn Johnson East, sportscaster Pam Oliver and deaf community advocate and Dancing with the Stars champ Nyle DiMarco.
- Heidelberg is home to the world-class National Center for Water Quality Research, (NCWQR) which supports the sustainable use of soil and water resources and helps protect human health and the ecological integrity of aquatic ecosystems through research, monitoring, education and outreach. Lab staff members are often sought as experts on Lake Erie’s algae situation.
- Heidelberg enrolls approximately 1,400 students, offering 70 majors, minors and pre-professional programs and graduate programs in education, counseling, business administration, music education and soon, athletic training.
- Heidelberg is ranked in the top tier of colleges and universities in U.S. News & World Report’s annual survey and has been continuously accredited by the Higher Learning Commission since 1913.
- The 125-acre campus has undergone a dramatic and aesthetically beautiful transformation over the past 9 years: $23 million invested in 11 new or completely renovated facilities and several more on the horizon.
- Cadaver Lab - Heidelberg always has three cadavers on campus for use in classes. This gives you an edge in graduate school where many students will be looking at cadavers for the first time. As an upperclassmen, you’ll have the opportunity to dissect a cadaver as well as practice specialty dissections of knees, the spinal cord, eyeballs, larynxes, and brains. You’ll also have access to disarticulated human skeletons, one articulated skeleton, and seven skulls. The lab started in 1988.
FUN FACTS
- Heidelberg’s mascot is the Student Prince, “Siggy” for short. The Student Prince has landed Heidelberg on various unique college nickname lists through the years.
- Heidelberg is believed to be the only school whose tri-colors are red, orange and black.
- The Heidelberg Hogwarts Harry Potter Fest celebrates young wizards and witches every February. Muggles are invited too!
- Last fall, senior offensive lineman Brock Riggs received the Piesman Award from SB Nation in New York City, presented to college lineman who do “un-linemanlike things.” Brock was honored for his touchdown and front-flip off a hook-and-lateral on Senior Day.
- Every year, new freshmen are given Heidelberg “beanies” as a symbol of their entrance into the ’Berg family. Many alumni keep their beanies forever.
- Each graduating class creates a class banner for graduation. The banners live in perpetuity and are brought out whenever the class returns to campus for a milestone anniversary (5-year all the way through 60-year or 65-year graduation anniversaries).
