Second daycare center accused of failing to report abuse of Aniya Day-Garrett

Inspectors say the Get Ready, Set, Grow daycare center in Euclid "failed to immediately notify their local public children services agency of suspicions that a child had been abused or neglected."

State investigators say a second Cleveland area daycare center failed to report suspicions that Aniya Day-Garrett was physically abused before the 4-year-old died.

Documents released by the Ohio Department of Jobs and Family Services on Wednesday show an inspection this month at the Get Ready, Set, Grow daycare center in Euclid found "the program failed to immediately notify their local public children services agency of suspicions that a child had been abused or neglected."

A corrective plan from the center was due Monday.

"[The center] has submitted its corrective action plan. We are reviewing it and working with the program to submit any corrections or clarifications where needed before it’s finalized. We will share at that time," spokesman Bret Crow said in an email Wednesday.

A grand jury on Monday indicted Aniya's mother, Sierra Day, and the woman's boyfriend, Deonte Lewis, for the child's death on March 11. An investigation showed the girl was beaten for years and died of her injuries.

The death has prompted protests against the Cuyahoga County Department of Children and Family Services by citizens who contend the agency should have done more to protect the 4-year-old girl. The agency did have contact with the family on three occasions in 2017, but Aniya was not removed from the home.

A task force is now investigating the county's actions to determine if social workers should have done more.

The Ohio Department of Jobs and Family Services earlier cited another of Aniya's daycare centers, Harbor Crest.

A May 2017 Euclid police report showed the agency compiled 14 instances of abuse against the child dating back to 2015. Staff, however, apparently failed to contact county children services about the abuse, as required.

Harbor Crest disputed the findings but agreed to retrain its workers.
