COLUMBUS -- The state Controlling Board has approved $3.25 million for the clean up of the ARCO dump in East Cleveland.
Sen. Kenny Yuko, of Richmond Heights, announced the funding Monday.
The Environmental Protection Agency has already received $6 million of the state's operating budget to clean up the Noble Road dump, which it shut down last year. The landfill site caught fire in October and authorities executed a search warrant at a business owned by the dump's owner.
A year ago, the EPA ordered ARCO to clean up the site, which the company appealed.
Residents have long made complaints about the dump, which spanned nearly 2 million yards of waste and debris. Residents report foul odors emanating from the dump during the summer months. Still, the EPA said the air quality is safe.
