MANSFIELD - A person was found dead Saturday morning at the Gorman Nature Center in Mansfield, Maj. Joe Masi of the Richland County Sheriff's Office has confirmed.
"A body was found," Masi said about 2 p.m. Saturday. "The coroner is en route and we are doing a death investigation."
"No foul play is suspected."
Masi said the body is believed to be a missing person from the Lexington area, but he could not offer any more details on how long they have been missing. He said the next-of-kin still needs to be found and notified of the situation.
The body was reported Saturday morning, Masi said. Deputies immediately closed the nature center, which Masi said would remain closed throughout the investigation.
Masi would not say if the body was that of a man or a woman.
"I cannot say any more," he said. "As we get further information, we will release it, whatever we can."
The sheriff's office will continue the investigation. Masi said any further information will come directly from Richland County Sheriff Steve Sheldon sometime Monday morning.
