Westerville shooting: Police dog to live with family of slain Ohio officer

'You've got three little girls that are losing their dad. This is an opportunity for them to heal just a little bit.'

WESTERVILLE, Ohio -- Westerville police officer Eric Joering's canine partner, Sam, is going home to live with the fallen officer's family, a small comfort for the three young girls who lost their father Saturday.

"The value of Sam staying with that family is immeasurable," said Westerville Police Chief Joe Morbitzer. "You've got three little girls that are losing their dad. This is an opportunity for them to heal just a little bit."

Westerville City Council will consider a motion to retire Sam. Council members told Morbitzer that it was imperative that Sam stay with Joering's family.

Working with the police dogs was Joering's dream job, the chief said.

Joering and officer Anthony Morelli were killed in the line of duty Saturday, responding to a disconnected 911 call. The man accused of killing them, Quentin Smith, is facing two charges of aggravated murder of a police officer. He faces the death penalty if convicted.

On Monday, Morbitzer told Joering's wife, Jami, the good news that Sam could remain with the family.

"(T)hat was such an uplifting moment for her. She was going to tell the girls as soon as she got off the phone," he said.

The chief also thanked police, residents and even some professional sports teams for their support of the Westerville Division of Police. Flower arrangements were provided by the New York Yankees. The Minnesota Vikings offered support. Businesses and residents have brought food for officers and their families. Hotels offered free stays for relatives of the officers.

"We are more than thankful. We can't even explain how thankful we are," Morbitzer said.
