Lake High School student dies in car crash

The cause remains under investigation.

The Stark County Sheriff's Office says a 16-year-old girl was killed Tuesday morning in a car crash in Lake Township.

Macie Behringer, of Jackson Township, was apparently driving north on Market Ave. around 8:15 a.m. when she lost control of her vehicle and slid into the southbound lane. Her vehicle was then struck by a minivan being driven by 29-year-old Amber Pattie of Uniontown.

Behringer was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities say she was not wearing her seat belt.

The teen has been a student at Lake High School, where she was also a cheerleader and gymnast. The school district released the following statement on her death:

Due to the tragic loss of Lake Senior Macie Behringer earlier this morning in a fatal two-car accident, all scheduled Lake High School athletic events have been cancelled.

Lake Middle School athletic events will go on as scheduled.

Our counselors will be available in the Hot Spot for the remainder of today for those who feel the need to talk to someone. Students should also feel free to rely on that trusted teacher, principal, parents, and others who may be of help during this difficult time.

Also, please note that RiverTree Church, Lake Campus, located at 2201 Lake Center St., N.W. Uniontown, will also have food, drink, and support available for anyone needing grief counseling for the rest of the day and night, as long as it is needed. For more info contact the church at 330.966.9605

Pattie sustained only minor injuries in the crash, which remains under investigation. Officials believe speed was a factor.
