Nexus pipeline construction to blame for partial road collapse in Green

The roadway between Nimisila and Kipplinger roads is closed through Friday.

GREEN, Ohio -- City officials have confirmed that construction of the Nexus pipeline through the city caused a partial road collapse at S. Arlington Road in Green.

The roadway between Nimisila and Kipplinger roads is closed through Friday until repairs can be made. A steel plate is temporarily covering the roadway, but city officials said they decided to block the area for the safety of drivers because of a gap in between the two steel plates on the road.

Paul Pickett, engineer for the city of Green, said the contractor was using a boring machine to place a temporary pipe underneath the road.

"The soil conditions are really challenging," Pickett said. "It's really wet and they ran into some larger stones that slowed down the travel of the pipe they were pushing through but the auger was still pulling material out. So in short, it created a void."

While concerns have been raised over the Nexus construction in the city and surrounding areas, Pickett said issues similar to the partial road collapse is not abnormal during construction.

"This would be a routine issue if the city were doing a project like this," Pickett said.

Pickett also noted that Nexus is responsible for the repairs similar to any outside contractor would be if they were working within the city.
