CLEVELAND -- The Cleveland Indians have activated designated hitter/first baseman Edwin Encarnacion from and placed outfielder Rajai Davis on the 10-day disabled list, the team announced Wednesday afternoon.
Davis was placed on the disabled list with a non-baseball medical condition retroactive to Monday, August 20.
The announcement came down hours ahead of the third game of a four-game series between the Indians and Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park. The Indians (American League Central Division) and Red Sox (AL East) hold commanding leads for first place in their respective divisions.
Encarnacion was placed on the 10-day disabled list with a right hand contusion on August 11.
In 104 games this season, Encarnacion has 88 hits in 384 at-bats (.229 batting average) with 56 runs scored and 81 runs batted in. Of Encarnacion’s 88 hits, 39 have gone for extra bases (14 doubles, 25 home runs).
Additionally, Encarnacion has .317 on-base, .461 on-base and .778 on-base-plus-slugging percentages.
Encarnacion ranks fourth on the Indians in runs scored, sixth in both hits and at-bats, seventh in doubles, third in home runs and second in RBI.
Over 81 games this season, Davis is hitting .246 with 43 hits in 175 at-bats. Davis has stolen 16 bases in 21 attempts in his second tenure with the Indians.
