WKYC to air Musial Awards, with Jim Thome receiving lifetime achievement award

Viewers will be able to watch Thome's latest honor on Saturday, Dec. 15 at 8 p.m.

Last month, Cleveland Indians great Jim Thome received his latest honor when he was presented with the Stan Musial Lifetime Achievement Award for Sportsmanship at the annual Musial Awards in St. Louis.

Now fans will be able to see Thome accept the award, as WKYC Channel 3 will air the Musial Awards on two separate occasions in the coming weeks.

Viewers in Northeast Ohio will first be able to see the presentation during an airing of the awards on Sat. Dec. 15 at 8 p.m. A second airing of the show will take place on Christmas Day at 11 a.m.

According to a press release, Thome's latest honor is considered "the pinnacle honor bestowed at the event and the highest award for sportsmanship." The event's other top honor, the Musial Award for Extraordinary Character, was be presented to Sister Jean Dolores Schmidt, the chaplain of the Loyola Men's Basketball team.

Other honorees at this year's event included Hall of Fame shortstop Ozzie Smith, Florida State softball head coach Lonni Alameda, Iowa basketball player Jordan Bohannon, Arlington Seguin swimmer Gerald Hodges II, Minnesota high school pitcher Ty Koehn, youth hockey goalie Kaiden Whaley and Sioux Falls Christian golfer Kate Wynja.

This year marked the 13th edition of the Musial Awards, which in addition to keeping alive the legacy of Cardinals great Stan "The Man" Musial, aim to "encourage selflessness, integrity and civility in sports and society – and to inspire people across the nation to be good sports."

A 22-year MLB veteran, Thome spent 13 seasons (1991-2002, 2011) of his Hall of Fame career in Cleveland. While playing with the Indians, the left-handed hitting first and third baseman compiled a .287 batting average and 937 runs batted in, as well as 337 of his 612 career home runs.

In July, Thome was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, N.Y. A month later, the Indians retired his No. 25 uniform number at Progressive Field.
