GM John Dorsey committed to doing whatever makes Browns better team

Cleveland Browns GM John Dorsey addressed the media in Berea one week prior to the start of the 2019 NFL Draft.

BEREA, Ohio — 12:45 p.m.-John Dorsey wants to fortify ‘whole thing,’ build competitive depth

Cleveland Browns general manager John Dorsey does not (yet) have a first-round pick to make in the 2019 NFL Draft because of the trade for wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. early in the offseason, but with one week to go until the annual selection meeting, he is committed to doing what is necessary to improve the team.

In his pre-draft media availability, Dorsey made the point several times that if he believes making a move will benefit the Browns, both in the short and long terms, the veteran decision-maker is willing to consider it.

“If I believe it will help the Browns, I’ll do it,” Dorsey said when asked about trading back into the first round. “It’s got to work on both sides.

“Those are the scenario games that we’ll begin to play Monday and Tuesday. You have to wait and see how those moments unfold.”

Currently, the Browns hold eight selections, starting with the No. 49 overall pick, the 17th choice in the second round.

In addition to holding their own selections in the second, third, fourth, fifth and sixth rounds, the Browns have two more fifth-round choices courtesy of trades with the Jacksonville Jaguars for running back Carlos Hyde and New England Patriots for wide receiver Josh Gordon, respectively.

Also, because of the Cody Kessler trade with the Jaguars, the Browns have a seventh-round choice.

“We’re trying to get as many competitive football players as we can that can contribute,” Dorsey said. “I’d love for all eight of them to become starters, but I know that’s not realistic.”

Regardless of what direction the Browns go in during the 2019 NFL Draft, Dorsey knows whatever positivity surrounding the organization now must be justified by hard work both during the offseason program and when the team reports for training camp in July.

“You’ve got to go to training camp and earn the respect everybody’s talking about,” Dorsey said. “Games are won and lost in the fall. My mindset is to go 1-0 every week. It’s one game at a time, and you have to live with that.”

After trading for wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. earlier in the offseason, the Cleveland Browns do not have a first-round pick in the 2019 NFL Draft…at least not yet, but there still is plenty of intrigue surrounding the team heading into the league’s annual selection meeting next weekend.

Browns general manager John Dorsey held the traditional pre-draft media press conference at noon at team headquarters in Berea.
