In addition to causing headaches for travelers and those with outdoor plans, the rain can be heavy enough to trigger flooding in some communities.

Less humid air is poised to sweep in at midweek after Florence departs. Showers and thunderstorms will dot the southern Atlantic Seaboard, including in the Carolinas where major river flooding will persist.

Areas from the upper Great Lakes to the northern Plains may be dampened by stormy weather. Much of the balance of the nation's midsection will be dry and warm.

The West will remain rain-free, with unseasonably hot weather expected across the Four Corners states.
