The gas leak that occurred in the area of East Avenue and 4th Street in Elyria on Wednesday afternoon has been repaired, according to Lorain County Emergency Management Agency Director Tom Kelley.

The gas leak that occurred in the area of East Avenue and 4th Street in Elyria on Wednesday afternoon has been repaired, according to Lorain County Emergency Management Agency Director Tom Kelley.

Construction crews working in the area hit a gas line. According to Elyria Fire Department Assistant Chief Joe Pronesti, 2-3 homes were mandatory evacuated. Other residents in the area, including a 13-story high rise, were told to shelter in place.

A gas station in the area was also evacuated.

Crews had to cut power to a high tension line, causing 15-20 blocks (approximately 700 customers) to be without power. Kelley reports that power has been restored.

Columbia Gas personnel worked throughout the afternoon and into the evening to cap the leak. Pronesti says the rainy weather was a huge help in dissipating the gas.

Traffic in the area was already being detoured because of the construction work.
