Request rejected for woman set to be deported from Northeast Ohio

Garcia, who ICE is in the process of deporting, has been seeking sanctuary at a church since Sept. 5.

CLEVELAND HEIGHTS, Ohio -- Church leaders and members stood outside of immigration and customs enforcement offices in Brooklyn Heights on Monday, protesting and praying ICE would have a change of heart about deporting Akron mother of two, Leonor Garcia.

Pastor John Lentz attempted to apply for a stay of removal on her behalf but was unsuccessful.

Leonor has lived in the United States illegally for 20 years but has been working toward gaining citizenship. Just three months ago, she had to move to Forest Hills Church Presbyterian, seeking asylum because ICE told her she'd be deported. ICE is aware she's here but its sensitive locations policy means ICE won't come get her as long as she's in the church, unless ordered to do so.

Her supporters argue they should leave her alone.

Lentz said the application was denied because Leonor wasn't present. For now, it's back to the drawing board for Lentz and Garcia's supporters, who are staying in her corner until the end.
