Rocky River native Red Gerard finishes 5th in men's big air snowboarding, failing to medal

He landed all three of his runs clean, but his tricks were unfortunately not big enough to get the appropriate score.

The incredible Olympic journey of Rocky River native Red Gerard is officially over after the 17-year-old failed to medal in men's big air snowboarding.

Gerard, the gold medalist in men's slopestyle, finished fifth in the field of 12 with a combined score of 143.00, 25 points out of a podium spot. He landed all three of his runs clean, but his tricks were unfortunately not big enough to get the appropriate score. He was not expected to medal, and has even admitted big air is his weaker event.

Just as they were when he won slopestyle, Red's friends and family back in Rocky River were cheering him on all the way at Market on Linda St. The young snowboarder now lives in Silverthorne, Colorado, but still has deep ties to Northeast Ohio, and his dad was even spotted at his gold medal run wearing a Cleveland Browns hat.

Canada's Sebastian Toutant took home gold with a score of 174.25, while Gerard's American teammate Kyle Mack won the silver, followed by Great Britain's Billy Morgan with the bronze. This was the first Olympics to feature big air snowboarding.
