CHAGRIN FALLS, Ohio — Like Times Square in New York City, it's becoming an annual tradition. However, what would it be without its own Northeast Ohio twist?
Chagrin Falls will once again drop a giant popcorn ball down a 50-foot flagpole in the village triangle this New Year's Eve as we fade into 2020. Paying homage to the community's affinity for the tasty treats, the event dates back to 2013 and has even survived a theft attempt a couple years ago.
This year, though, the village is taking things up a notch: The old ball known as "Ms. Poppy" has been retired, and now "Hugh Mungus" will take over with an incredible 5-feet-10-inch diameter and a weight of 233 pounds. The village says this is more than twice the weight of Ms. Poppy alone.

Completed with the help of the Chagrin Falls Popcorn Shop and made with all-Ohio ingredients, the massive sphere will be hoisted up the flagpole on Dec. 29 and be brought slowly down as the clock strikes midnight two days later. Once the countdown is completed, the "Popcorn Ball Bazookas" from the Chagrin Hardware Store will launch 200 regular-sized treats into the crowd.
The popcorn ball drop is free to all comers, and the event starts at 11:15 in the Chagrin Falls Village Triangle.
