Greater Cleveland Aquarium offers indoor fun during cold winter months

The family-friendly facility is open 7 days a week.

CLEVELAND — Winter has officially arrived in Northeast Ohio. Wind, frigid temperatures and of course, snow. Those conditions aren't the most ideal for outdoor fun unless you're heading to your nearest sled hill or the toboggan chutes.

But if you're someone who enjoys having fun and being warm, the Greater Cleveland Aquarium is the perfect place to enjoy the winter months.

Built inside the historic FirstEnergy Powerhouse, the Aquarium first opened to the public in 2012. The family-friendly facility has tons of exhibits to explore:

  • Ohio Lakes and Rivers
  • Asia and Indonesia
  • Tropical Forest
  • Industry and Habitat
  • Giant Pacific Octopus
  • Costal Boardwalk
  • Tropical Reef
  • Shark Gallery and SeaTube

The Shark Galley features 230,000 gallons of water that started out as City of Cleveland tap water. Inside you can learn more about sharks and understand that there is more to revere about the species than to fear.

Additionally, the Aquarium is one of the few in the world to have experienced successful weedy seadragon births.

In addition to the popular exhibits, the Aquarium also offers private parties and events, plus themed days. The next themed festivities are Valentine's Day the weekend of February 10-14. They'll have oversized Valentine's Day Cards and extended date night hours.

The Greater Cleveland Aquarium has located a 2000 Sycamore Street in the West Bank of the Flats. The hours of operation are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., 7 days a week. For more information, click here or call 216.862.8803.
