CLEVELAND — Becoming a great yo-yoer takes patience, precision, and years of practice.
WKYC Meteorologist Matt Wintz learned that the hard way when he visited the 2019 World YoYo Contest in Cleveland.
Trying to fulfill a childhood dream of hanging with the best yo-yoers America has to offer, Matt tried his hand at a few tricks he learned from former world champion Gentry Stein. He won his first world contest at just 18 years old.
The contest came to Cleveland for the first time in 2016. It stops in North America every three years between other stops across the world. The two stops in Cleveland are thanks to organizer Steve Brown, based right here in Cleveland, and the Greater Cleveland Sports Commission.
While Matt realized he might stick to meteorology, yo-yoing can be for everyone. The contest is attempting to bring as many people to Public Square Friday night to break the Guinness World Record for as many people yo-yoing as possible. Public attendance at the contest is also welcome.
The contest is being held at the Renaissance Hotel in Public Square. It wraps up Saturday night. For a full schedule, click here.
