CLEVELAND — Editor's note: Video at the top of this story was originally published when the 2022 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction nominees were first revealed on Feb. 2, 2022.
Just a few days before Dolly Parton announced her decision to bow out of the 2022 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction process, the country star addressed her nomination in an interview on HLN.
“I was as shocked as anybody that I was nominated in the Hall of Fame,” Parton said during the HLN conversation on Friday, March 11. “I never thought of myself as being in rock and roll although I’ve done rock songs and all. They say they judge that on several other things, I don’t really know exactly what.”

Parton said the nomination did inspire her, however, to work on some rock music very soon.
“I’m actually going to do a real, serious, hard-on rock album after the first of the year,” she told HLN. “I’ll at least try to measure up that I got nominated.”
Then, just three days later, Parton made national headlines after posting the following message across social media: “Even though I am extremely flattered and grateful to be nominated for the Rock & Roll H all of Fame, I don't feel that I have earned that right,” Parton posted on social media Monday morning. “I really do not want votes to be split because of me, so I must respectfully bow out. I do hope that the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame will understand and be willing to consider me again - if I'm ever worthy. This has, however, inspired me to put out a hopefully great rock 'n' roll album at some point in the future, which I have always wanted to do!”
Rock and Roll Hall of Fame officials in Cleveland told 3News on Tuesday morning they do not have a statement or update on the situation at this time. Parton currently remains listed as a nominee on the Rock Hall’s site and is still receiving new votes in the fan ballot.
Parton was announced as one of this year's 17 nominees last month. You can see the full list of 2022 Rock Hall nominees HERE. The final list of inductees will officially be revealed in May with the ceremony to follow this fall.
To be eligible for nomination, an individual artist or band must have released its first commercial recording at least 25 years prior to the year of nomination.
“Nominee ballots are sent to an international voting body of more than 1,000 artists, historian, and members of the music industry,” Rock Hall officials explain. “Factors such as an artist’s musical influence on other artists, length and depth of career and the body of work, innovation and superiority in style and technique are taken into consideration.”
