Roller skating transcends generations at United Skates in Wickliffe

With the help of regulars and the internet, skate culture continues to grow.

WICKLIFFE, Ohio — When you think of America's favorite past time, most often, baseball comes to mind. But in communities across the nation, roller skating has rolled into the hearts of generations.

United Skates in Wickliffe has been a staple in the Northeast Ohio skating community for decades. The facility opened in 1977 and has remained a popular destination for children, adults and families.

"It’s a place to go, a place to relax, to get away from all the emotions of everyday life, to bond, and just to have a great time," says United Skates General Manager Ann Marie.

Lacing up skates for most of her life, Ann Marie has served as the general manager for 35 years. She's seen first hand the impact the business has had on those that visit the rink.

"It brings the good vibes, everybody in here, everybody gets along, ain’t no drama in here," describes skater Mario Moorewood. "It’s a big stress reliever, so every time we come in here it’s a good energy, so I love it for that."

Skating is an activity for everyone. Whether you're a beginner or more advanced like the skate crews that attend weekly sessions; All you need is the courage to try.

"We all motivate each other to get better, we travel around, visit different rinks. We just try to get better every time, " explains Moorewood.

With the help of the internet, more and more people are being exposed to skate culture.

"It's bigger now, it's more people skating worldwide now than ever," says veteran skater Arthur Teague.

When it comes to skating, there are no rules. Each city has its own flare, shufflers, freestylers, folks with footwork and countless other skating styles.

No matter your style, when you hit the hardwood, you're family.

“As long as we see people with the brown skates, that means that more people are coming," says Teague.
