Channel 3 News Sweeps Major Emmy Awards

The Lower Great Lakes chapter of the National Association of Television Arts & Sciences held their 45th annual Emmy® ceremony last Saturday night at the Cleveland Convention Center's Grand Ballroom, honoring stations and journalists were honored for work done in broadcast media for the year 2013.

WKYC took home a sweep of the evening's major news categories including Best Evening Newscast, Best Morning Newscast and Best Breaking News Coverage.

"We are thrilled that the hard work and commitment to quality journalism that we strive for every day at Channel 3 has been recognized by our peers. To have won every major award in the news categories is just unbelievably satisfying and truly a reflection of the efforts of every employee of Channel 3." said station manager Micki Byrnes.

Several Channel 3 News staffers also took home individual honors as well. Investigative reporter Tom Meyer was awarded a Best Continuing Coverage Emmy for his exclusive interviews in the investigation of Ariel Castro, the Cleveland man who held three young women captive for a decade. Meyer's "Lawmakers and Living Large" report on Ohio lawmakers' spending was also recognized for excellence in coverage of political, civil, government issues.

Anchor Kris Pickel received an Emmy for excellence in coverage of current issues of societal concern, social ills, community or general public interest for her story on "Dangerous Cleveland", a look at reality versus perception when it comes to Cleveland being an unsafe place to live.

"Every day, and in every way, we work to shine a light on the good, the bad and the ugly, always keeping mindful of our commitment to the viewer to present that information in an interesting, educational, useful way. To be recognized for our efforts in what was an incredibly competitive year in news is just incredibly rewarding." said Channel 3 News Director Brennan Donnellan.

WKYC's Marketing Department also earned an Emmy for Best Station Promotion Campaign for their "See the Possible: Focus" series with the team of Monique Jackson, Steve Pullen, and Matt Quinn being recognized for their work.
