We are under siege from a terrible respiratory illness… either you’ve got it, or you know someone who does! It seems like half the employees here at Channel 3 are battling it! So what’s causing it, how do you treat it, and most importantly: can you avoid it? Dr. Jennifer Hanrahan, Director of Infection Prevention for MetroHealth Medical Center, stopped by to give Hollie & Joe all the details.
Here are some of the questions Hollie & Joe had for Dr. Hanrahan:
- Dr. Hanrahan- is it our imagination or is this respiratory illness taking our region by storm
- If you feel that you’re getting it- the scratchy throat or the congestion kicks up- is there anything you can do to lessen its impact?
- If you do get it, what’s the best way to treat it?
- At what point should you see a doctor?
- Many folks are battling it for more than a week or two- is there a way to shorten its duration?
- What about prevention- what’s the best way NOT to get it when everyone around you is hacking and coughing?
- Are some people more susceptible than others?
- Does battling this disease actually make you more susceptible to the H1N1 flu that’s also going around
