Al Roker reflects on years spent working for WKYC as he celebrates 70th birthday: 'I still love Cleveland'

'I sincerely mean I could not be who I am today without those five years that I spent in Cleveland.'

CLEVELAND — It's a very special day for our friend Al Roker as he celebrates his 70th birthday.

Before Tuesday's edition of TODAY began on NBC, Roker joined us for a few minutes live on the GO! morning show so our team could send him well wishes for his birthday.

“Al, we just want to wish you a very, very happy 70th birthday," said 3News' Danita Harris. "You are a legend. You know you’re a legend here at WKYC and we just wish you all the best. You’re looking wonderful.”

He then took a moment to reflect on the time he previously spent working for WKYC here in Cleveland, calling it "five of the best years of my life."

“I sincerely mean I could not be who I am today without those five years that I spent in Cleveland," Roker said. "The city embraced me. I still love Cleveland. It is a place that is really close to my heart. So thank you so much, I appreciate it.”

He has also previously said Northeast Ohio "is literally my second home."

During one of his visits back to Cleveland in May of 2021, 3News announced we named our radar tower in Roker's honor. You can watch the moment he learned that news in the video below, which happened as he was reporting live for TODAY from outside the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with our Chief Meteorologist Betsy Kling.
