Cleveland Zoo announces addition of new tiger, wolves

Welcome Zoya, Meraki and Sarra!

CLEVELAND — The Cleveland Metroparks Zoo on Friday announced the addition of three new residents.

The zoo says it recently welcomed an Amur tiger, named Zoya, and two Mexican grey wolves, named Meraki and Sarra.

Zoya comes from Odense Zoo in Demark. The four-year-old is the zoo's first new tiger since Hector arrived in 2017. Zoya will be gradually introduced to the zoo's other tigers in the Rosebrough Tiger Passage.

Amur tigers are endangered in the wild with an estimated global population of only 500, according to the zoo.

Meraki and Sarra are sisters, coming from the same litter born in 2018. The pair was received from The Endangered Wolf Center, based in Eureka, Missouri. The addition of Meraki and Sarra increases the Cleveland Zoo's wolf pack to five as the sisters join three male wolves.

The zoo says the Mexican grey wolf species is still recovering after it was eliminated across the U.S. by the 1970s. There are now more than 100 Mexican grey wolves living near the Arizona-New Mexico border.
