Building up their snow base: Boston Mills/Brandywine take advantage of wintry blast

The snowflakes are flying!

PENINSULA, Ohio — It hasn't really felt much like winter -- until now.

With several inches of snow piling up this weekend amid much colder temperatures, the folks at Boston Mills/Brandywine ski resorts took advantage of the wintry blast.

"Today is absolutely a skier's dream. It's snowing!" Thomas Conti of Boston Mills/Brandywine told 3News early Sunday morning. "We got about two inches of snow overnight, and the snow guns are on. It's going to be a perfect day to hit the slopes and we are just super excited that Mother Nature has finally complied with us."

When it comes to making snow, Conti said there's a science to it.

"We're just throwing water into the air, very fine particles of water," Conti explained. "While that water particle is floating in the air, it's literally turning into a snowflake."

Conti said making snow is most ideal when temperatures are 28 degrees or below.

Boston Mills/Brandywine will be able to keep building their snow base early this week, too, because more bitterly cold temperatures are expected through Tuesday before we warm into the 40s by Wednesday.

The ski resorts are offering extended hours for the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend with the slopes open from 9 a.m. until 10 p.m. Sunday and Monday.

During our visit to the resorts Sunday, 3News' Lindsay Buckingham was given a ride inside one of their Snowcats to see what it takes their teams to groom the ski slopes:
