BEACHWOOD, Ohio — It's a busy day as usual for Dr. Reuben Gobezie. The renowned shoulder surgeon based in Beachwood spends his morning going room to room visiting patients.
It's a day fueled by his passion for helping others with a little help from a large latte with three shots of espresso.
His father was a doctor, so his passion for medicine is in his roots. His love for coffee? That's in his blood.
"I am from Ethiopia. The home of coffee right?"
That's why when the brand new Lake Health Beachwood Medical Center opened earlier this year, he combined his love for helping others with his love for coffee.
"How can we use our desire to do something meaningful in the city of Cleveland?"
You'll find the answer to that question in the lobby: Daily Dose Coffee Shop with the slogan "Coffee for a Cause."
It's not something he's using to get rich. Instead, he's using it to enrich the community.
"In Cleveland, one of our critical problems right now is homelessness," said Gobezie.
Homelessness in youth, specifically. Last year, there were more than 2,700 homeless kids in the Cleveland school system alone.
“I’m from Ethiopia. East Africa," said Gobezie. "Where we have homelessness as an endemic problem, but for different reasons: War and HIV. Here we're in the United States of America, the greatest country. How can we have 2,700 homeless kids?”
To help solve that problem, 100 percent of the proceeds from the Daily Dose Coffee Shop goes to City Mission and the New Horizons Program, a charity that helps single mothers find employment and create financial independence.
While the shop just opened in April, Dr. Gobezie said he believes that it will raise more than $20,000 a year for the program.
