CLEVELAND — It's approaching the last call to apply for a central Ohio camp that aims to provide healing and transformative experiences for children living with serious illnesses.
Flying Horse Farms in Mount Gilead is a free camp that helps kids aged 7-21 with serious illnesses and their families.
They have camps for kids diagnosed with a range of illnesses so they can have the same — or better — experiences all kids can have at camp.
Campers live in cabins, go boating, make arts and crafts and play sports, all under proper medical supervision.
"We start by making sure kids are medically, physically, and emotionally safe at camp, so they can focus on fun," Flying Horse Farms states on its website. "We understand that children with serious illnesses have special needs from diets to devices. Addressing those needs comes before anything else.
"We also make sure they’re mentally and emotionally safe because that’s what builds confidence. Kids at Flying Horse Farms get the opportunity to freely explore interests and passions in a way they’ve never experienced, and get psychosocial, trauma informed support from on-site child life specialists."
According to Flying Horse Farms, covered diagnoses include cancer, heart conditions, rheumatologic diagnoses, blood disorders, lung conditions, gastrointestinal disorders, craniofacial diagnoses, rare diagnoses and mental health conditions.
Flying Horse Farms is accepting camp applications until March 15.
