CLEVELAND — Even though we are in a mild week right now, this summer, we are experiencing some of the hottest weather on record. And every year around this time, we start to see fall sports start their practices outside to prepare for the season.
In today's Mom Squad, pediatric sports medicine doctor, Richard So with the Cleveland Clinic, talked to me about how to make sure your child is safe and how to make sure they don't suffer heat exhaustion.
“One of the most important things is you start your hydration process the night before,” So said. “For example, if this is your body's hydration tank, which needs at least 60% water, if you don't drink the night before, you start with half a tank. And as the sun goes up and you start sweating, and [your tank] gets down to here, you start to make mental errors."
So tells all of his athletes to drink a bottle of water at night and then again before practice to make sure their hydration levels are ready to practice at length outside.
We talked in depth about what signs to look out for when it comes to heat exhaustion or heat stroke, which include dizziness, nausea or vomiting, headaches.
