CLEVELAND — Great communication is the basis of a happy relationship. So, when we miscommunicate or have bad communication habits, our relationships suffer.
This year, it's time we resolve to improve our communication skills. In today's Mom Squad, Dr. Chivonna Childs, with the Cleveland Clinic, explains what we should do.
"When I work with couples, one of the things I suggest is -- you can do this with your entire family, that would be hilarious -- but a couples meeting. And this is out of the Gotman's rules for families and couples is: Once a week, sit down with you and your significant other. No phones, no tablets, no TV's, nothing. Just you and that person. And just have that conversation, 'Hey, how has your week been going? My week's been going fine.' Work is this, work is that... 'How are things going with us? I think things are going good.' Or ,'I wish we had more alone time,'" Dr. Childs said.
Dr. Childs suggested making date night once a week a priority, and something we can do toward better communication. There are also better ways to argue.
