CLEVELAND — A like from Instagram, a new trend on TikTok, a snap from their ex. The impact of social media on teens is leading to a mental health crisis.
But it’s not just social media.
It also stems from how early kids are getting cell phones.
“Kids are being given devices at bonkers young ages,” says Jesse Weinberger, an expert and nationally renowned speaker on kids and cell phone use.
Weinberger sits down with 3News' Maureen Kyle for a special edition of Mom Squad, talking about the impact cell phone use is having on your children. They have an extremely candid conversation about the images and explicit content kids are being exposed to at young ages and how it’s leading to a mental health crisis across the world.
95+-percent of children ages 13-17 report using social media with their go-to apps being TikTok, Instagram and Snapchat. Nearly two-thirds of those teens say they use social media daily and a third say they're on it constantly -- and being on it constantly makes it hard for parents to monitor everything.
You can watch the special edition of Mom Squad as it airs on WKYC at 2:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 19.
