Mom Squad: The Peeps experiment

Whether you love or despise Peeps, they make for a fun science experiment. Maureen Kyle and her kids put Peeps to the acidic liquid test.

CLEVELAND — We are Peeps lovers. I fully admit it. So, this time of year, I have them in the pantry.

I came across a few “Easter” science experiments that involve seeing what happens to different candy when it’s soaked in vinegar. I figured, that is definitely one way to gross me out and maybe lose a few quarantine pounds. Oh, and it would be fun for the kids.

First, we lined up our clear cups again. This way we could see what happened to the liquids once we submerged the Peeps.

Then, we filled the cups up about ¾ of the way. All of the experiments say to use vinegar as at least one of the liquids because it affects the marshmallow the most. We also picked apple juice, lemon juice and water.

Once our cups were filled, the girls dunked the Peeps.

And here’s the catch – they are supposed to sit for 24 hours.

That might sound like a huge time investment for a kids science experiment, but throughout the rest of the day and the next morning, the girls kept checking on their Peeps. They wanted to see what changed, if anything was happening and they couldn’t wait to see how it turned out.

After 24 hours had passed, we took the Peeps out of the liquid.

“What do they feel like?” I asked them.

“Squishy!”

“Which one is squishiest?” I followed up.

They observed that the one that came out of the vinegar had the most “bubbles” on the bottom and fell apart more easily than the others. Since we used chicks and not bunnies, they noticed the heads of the chicks stayed dry, so the liquid didn’t travel. We also talked about the different acids and sugars in the liquids.

It was a win-win. The kids were entertained and there were four fewer Peeps for me to stress eat.
