Why overspending on holidays isn't good for kids: Mom Squad

We all want to make the holidays magical, but overspending not only hurts your wallet, it can lead to spoiled kids. A lifestyle expert shares advice on how to save.

CLEVELAND — The holidays bring a lot of joy and huge credit card bills. In today's Mom Squad, Maureen Kyle talks with lifestyle journalist Trae Bodge about how to plan a budget and stick to it.

Also, the two talked about something all parents do: Go overboard to make the holidays magical for our kids.

Bodge says, when we do this, we are only hurting them.

“So, parents often report that they go overboard when they are spending for their kids because like you said, they are only this age once and you want to make it magical for them. However, if you go overboard with your kids, what you end up doing, sometimes -- you are raising kids who expect that,” says Bodge.

“So, I always suggest keep it low and light with your kids every year. Maybe it's a couple of gifts per kid, maybe one special thing per year, something like that. That way, you can teach them that holiday can be about moderation. If you teach them about bounty, they are going to expect bounty."

Trae Bodge shares her top websites she uses to find the best deals on everything from gifts to travel.
