Reducing food waste and saving money: Mom Squad

Groceries are expensive! Throwing away unused food is like throwing money in the trash. A national shopping expert shares ways to save on food and reduce waste.

CLEVELAND — It happens in every household: Food waste! It's frustrating to see expensive groceries get thrown in the garbage.

According to the organization Feeding America, people in the United States waste 80 million tons of food every year. That equals 149 billion meals and those meals end up in landfills. We throw away $444 billion dollars in food every year and 38% of all food goes unsold or uneaten.

In today's Mom Squad, we are talking to shopping and lifestyle expert Trae Bodge about how to reduce waste and save money, and one way is to stop buying the same items all the time.

“I think it's good to mix things up a little bit. And a good way to do that is save money as you're shopping, definitely browse those circulars, maybe it will inspire a recipe you've wanted to try,” said Bodge.

“Or, there's a new app that I really love called “Flash Food” that partners with grocery stores around the country and helps them avoid food waste by selling through their items that are close to their best buy date and surplus, and you, as the consumer, can save up to 50 percent that way," said Bodge.

We took a look at the Flash Food app, which does post deals across our own Northeast Ohio grocery stores. We show you what we found and we talk about other ways you can make sure you're getting the most out of your groceries.
