Mom Squad: The impact screen time could have on your kids

'When children aren’t told to turn the screen off and do something that is far less engaging, that’s the time when emotional dysregulation can occur.'

CLEVELAND — Now that kids are home for the summer, downtime during the day might mean more time on the iPad or computer.

But do you notice tantrums or disrespectful behavior after they've used it?

In this edition of Mom Squad, 3News' Maureen Kyle talks with Dr. Michael Manos of the Cleveland Clinic about "emotional dysregulation" and how screens are causing it.

“When children aren’t told to turn the screen off and do something that is far less engaging, that’s the time when emotional dysregulation can occur," Dr. Manos says. "Kids will have a tantrum. They’ll refuse to comply with the parent’s request. Subsequently, that’s when screen time can be rather intrusive in family life. What does a screen do? A screen arouses the child to activity or to action by pushing buttons, by manipulating some kind of cursor on the screen to manage some kind of game endpoint. The engagement of the game is far more intense than the engagement of having to take the garbage out or the engagement of walking the dog.”
