b.a. Sweetie issues candy recall for 2 chocolate products sold at multiple Northeast Ohio stores

Officials say the recall was issued because the ingredient label does not state a wheat allergen.

CLEVELAND — The b.a. Sweetie Candy Company in Cleveland has issued a voluntary recall of two chocolate candies due to an undeclared wheat allergen.

The impacted products were packaged in either a 4.5 oz. clam pack container labeled “Chocolate Malt Balls” with a Dave’s Supermarket label, or in a bulk 3 lb. bag labeled “Chocolate Malted Milk Balls Bulk” with a b.a. Sweetie label.

The candy was available for sale at the following locations:

  • Sweetie Candy Company retail store
  • All Dave’s Market Grocery Stores in Cleveland, Akron, Garfield Heights, Euclid, Cleveland Heights and Richmond Heights
  • Groovy Candies in Cleveland
  • L&E Sugar Buzz in Amherst

"This recall has been initiated due to the ingredient label not stating a wheat allergen."

Customers with a wheat allergy or sensitivity who have purchased the affected product should dispose of it or return it to the b.a. Sweetie Candy Company for a replacement. Consumers with questions can contact b.a. Sweetie at 216-739-2244.

“The issue was discovered during a routine inspection conducted by the Ohio Department of Agriculture,” according to a press release from the Ohio Department of Agriculture on behalf of b.a. Sweetie. “There have been no reports of illness involving products addressed in this recall. However, people who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to wheat run the risk of a serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume this product.”
