CLEVELAND — After six great years in Lyndhurst, Goldie's Donuts & Bakery is preparing to open a second bakery and café in Ohio City.
Owners Dustin and Paloma Goldberg are days away from opening the attractive shop at 41 West, a mixed-use development at the corner of Lorain Avenue and West 41st St.
"You know, my family has always had a passion for baking," Dustin says. "Our grandmother was particularly good. We kind of named the place after her: 'Grandma Goldie.' Like I said, even some of the recipes are hers, but we kind of had an opportunity and we went for it."
Goldie's makes its donuts, fillings, frostings and glazes from scratch daily using premium ingredients. They are known for their selection of old-fashioned classics like sour cream donuts, maple-glazed cake donuts, honey-glazed crullers, strawberry jam-filled donuts and powdered sugar donuts, but also long johns, apple fritters, croissants, muffins, and brownies.
"The traditional donut kind of faded away — everyone started doing their own thing and their own rendition," Dustin adds. "But we're very traditional, and it's kind of like the ones your grandparents always had. We get that comment a lot, actually, people bringing them to their relatives because this is the way they like it, they remember it."
The donuts and pastries will be brought in fresh daily from Lyndhurst.
"Yeah, everything's seven-days-a-week fresh, and everything is made by hand — no automation," Dustin told us. "That gives us an edge."
Commanding a sunny corner spot in Ohio City, the gorgeous space doesn't exactly look like your typical mom-and-pop donut shop.
"We used marble and glass and brass in as much as we could," Dustin said. "We wanted it to feel like alive, but ... you can come in here and get an awesome treat for $2.25. I don't know if there's a lot of places you can go in and do that anymore."
This new location on Cleveland’s near-west side offers the company an opportunity to expand the menu, Dustin explained. Down the road, the owners hope to add breakfast and lunch items to the mix.
