Greenhouse Tavern to shut its doors later this month, 'Cleveland Scene' reports

Reasons for the closure are not yet known.

CLEVELAND — Popular downtown restaurant Greenhouse Tavern will close down for good sometime this month, Cleveland Scene has reported.

According to Scene food editor Douglas Trattner (who also does separate feature work for 3News), the eatery will shut down "after Valentine’s Day, if not before." The announcement was apparently made to staffers in a Tuesday meeting, and was later relayed to the publication by one of the employees present.

Greenhouse Tavern was the flagship spot for award-winning Chef Jonathon Sawyer, and was among Bon Appétit magazine's "Best New Restaurants" of 2009. Sawyer also ran both Trentina on Ford Drive and Noodlecat in Crocker Park, both of which have themselves closed within the last year.

Sawyer's status as the head chef at the aptly-named Sawyer's wood fire spot in the Van Aken district remains unchanged, according to Trattner. The reasons for the closure of Greenhouse Tavern are not yet clear, and 3News has reached out to Sawyer for comment.
