CHICAGO -- Local chef, and friend of Channel 3, Jonathan Sawyer received a top honor Monday night.
Sawyer was named best chef in the Great Lakes region, at the 2015 James Beard Foundation restaurant and chef awards.
The region covers the states of Ohio, Michigan, Illinois and Indiana, but the only other nominees in that category were chefs from the Chicago area.
Chef Sawyer has a few different restaurants and endeavors in Northeast Ohio, but this award is specifically for the Greenhouse Tavern, located on East 4th St.
Chef Sawyer's wife, Amelia, posted a picture of him wearing his medal on Facebook.
After the awards ceremony, Sawyer apologized on Twitter, saying he forgot to thank his mentor, Cleveland Chef Michael Symon, and his mom.
The mission of the James Beard Foundation is to celebrate, nurture and honor America's diverse culinary heritage through educational programs.
