CLEVELAND — A Cleveland restaurant is being recognized by the New York Times for having one of the best dishes.
Stuffed cabbage from the Prosperity Social Club in Tremont was named one of the 23 Best American Dishes of 2023.
In order to find the best dishes in America, the New York Times sent reporters and editors to eat hundreds of meals in dozens of states.
Here's why the New York Times says this dish from Northeast Ohio is one of the best:
"This barroom’s roots run to the 1930s, when immigrants from Eastern Europe were an established presence in the city’s Tremont neighborhood. The working-class legacy is still evident in Prosperity’s gritty décor, gruff hospitality and signature stuffed cabbage rolls, draped in paprika-stained sour cream-sauerkraut sauce," said Brett Anderson of the New York Times.
The Prosperity Social Club, which is described as having a "retro-style atmosphere, cool vibe, eclectic clientele and an unpretentious attitude," has been operating in Cleveland since 1938. It originated as Dempsey's Oasis, opening after prohibition ended.
Prosperity Social Club is located in Cleveland's Tremont neighborhood at 1109 Starkweather Ave.
