CLEVELAND -- An Ohio City restaurant has a history as rich as its palatable menu. WKYC Channel 3 toured Crop Bar and Bistro on Sunday. The restaurant is located inside of what was once the largest bank in the Midwest, according to chef and owner Steve Schimoler.
"It was open for four years, the stock market crashed and then it was closed through much of the depression," he said."[It] reopened as a bank, operated 65 years, closed again, the county turned it into the welfare office, [then] it sat vacant. I was introduced to the building and had to do the restaurant here."
Schimoler says he came up with the design and did much of the work to restore the space, which took about six months.
The building's historic 1925 architecture remains, including a bank vault in the basement which is now used to host private parties.
Crop Bar and Bistro is located at 2537 Lorain Ave. in Cleveland. Visit their website at cropbistro.com
