BEACHWOOD, Ohio — Made fresh and from scratch each day, these sweet treats at the Red Velvet Cake at Beachwood Place have been dubbed a local favorite in Northeast Ohio.
“The joy in the Red Velvet Cake is simply because it’s so moist, it’s so delicious! We use the finest ingredients, so it’s not like many other bakers who use cake mixes," says Melanie Peak. "It’s all from scratch!”
What started as a secret family recipe that owner Willie Peak learned from his mother as a child is now a viable business.
“I could remember as a kid, my mom would be in the kitchen mixing the batter for her cakes and my sister and I would be fighting to see who would get the batter," he explains.
But Willie never though he’d ever follow in her footsteps.
“I never dreamt of being a baker or had the desire to be a baker. I thought I would retire from selling insurance.”
But once he saw the smiles and joy his cakes brought, he knew it was destined to be.
“I just love seeing people happy and talking about how good it tastes," he says.
Melanie says working with her husband for almost a decade has been a fun ride -- even amid difficult times during the COVID pandemic. She says it has brought them closer together each day.
“He’s easy to work with. I love him, I really do! It was a work in progress, and we give God the glory that blesses our union and our business. I think that’s the key to keep us working together."
