NORTON, Ohio — The news continues to get more and more positive for 16-year-old Emma Pfouts.
Just months after the Norton High School cheerleader nearly lost her life from an asthma attack and was placed into a medically induced coma, her recovery is improving. Her mother posted an update Friday that said the teen "definitely has her personality back!"
"We were playing Post Malone “I’m Gonna Be” & she was singing and dancing to it," Christina Boyer Weigand wrote. "I can’t tell you how much my soul heals as she continually progresses back to us!"
Emma is still mostly confined to a bed at Akron Children's Hospital, but her neurologist apparently has told the family she was "incredibly lucky" and her brain injuries were not severe enough to block a recovery. Emma's mother even shared a video of her progress, during which she uses her eyes to point at an iPad screen and make it say "I live in Norton."
The Summit County community has rallied around Emma since her illness, and the University of Akron even hosted a basketball doubleheader in her honor back on Jan. 18. She is expected to continue therapy for the next two weeks before doctors decide what her next steps are.
"This kid, you guys, there are no words to express how incredibly proud I am of her!" her mother wrote. "She brings tears to my eyes thinking about the fighter she is!! We are so incredibly blessed!"
