2020 and COVID-19 have sadly robbed us of many traditions we hold dear. Luckily, the annual Chagrin Falls Pumpkin Roll was not one of them.
As has been the case every year since the late 1960s, Chagrin Falls High School students gathered at Grove Hill Monday to toss the large, orange vegetables down the slope. The event seemed just as big as in years past even with social distancing, and the mask-wearing teens in attendance punctuated the night by riding sleds down the hill with the gooey remains still inside.
The Pumpkin Roll began as a prank in 1967, but has since evolved into a cherished Halloween spectacle with many pumpkins being donated rather than stolen. The event was even the subject of a documentary in 2017, entitled "Grove Hill: A True Story."
