PHILADELPHIA — The notoriously eerie Eastern State Penitentiary, which once housed inmate Al Capone, has filled the autumn air with screams for years as one of America’s most popular haunted attractions.

The frightful fun, however, has been suspended for 2020 as the prison’s Terror Behind the Walls event has been canceled for the upcoming Halloween season.

Organizers said their decision is due to the financial impact of the coronavirus pandemic.

“Preparations for TBTW were underway for months, but we ultimately determined that modifying the attraction to comply with anticipated COVID-19 guidelines would have presented significant operational challenges and financial risk to Eastern State,” they said in a statement on Facebook.

Instead, the location is currently planning to offer smaller-scale evening tours this fall.

“It’s a sad day at Terror Behind the Walls. We hope to share some good news with you soon.”

The prison, which many believe to be among the most haunted locations in the country, has been the focus of numerous televised paranormal investigations on shows like Ghost Hunters and Portals to Hell
