CLEVELAND — Mother’s Day is this Sunday -- and as we prepare to celebrate moms this weekend, we’re getting to know more about 3News’ Danita Harris.
It comes as Senior Meteorologist Matt Wintz talked with Danita’s mother, Matilda Harris, here at WKYC Studios about what it’s like to watch her be such an amazing mom to her son, Chase.
But first, what's it like to be Danita's mom?
"First and foremost, I am a shepherd to someone that I’ve been entrusted to raise," Matilda said. "In doing so, I had to make sure that I watched her all the time because she was interesting from the very, very beginning. She would watch commercials and wouldn’t watch the actual movie or show. I took her to get a Stanford-Binet test done because I thought something was not so right about that girl. Come to find out, Danita is a very intelligent young lady. That’s what the test showed. I just kept watching her and nurturing what I thought was good. She always received very good grades, but she was a talker. So I made sure that she was navigated into the area where she could talk. That’s what she does. I think she’s very reachable. People tend to like her persona, and she gives quite a bit. As a shepherd, I am very pleased.”
And when it comes to her son...
“Danita tends to watch Chase the same way I watched her, and she tends to acknowledge the things that Chase is all about, not necessarily that she’s all about,” her mom said. “So she begins to veer him in directions she thinks will make him happy. I’ve noticed that about her, and I think that’s something that she could use for the rest of her life, the rest of his life. I think it’s just a good strategy, it really is, just to always watch your child and try to navigate them in such a way that they can live their best life.”
As we’ve learned since she joined our 3News family last month with the GO! morning team, Danita is a big fan of SPAM.
“Danita has had SPAM as a part of her life, all of her life. She cannot cook so well today, but she can cook SPAM. She can do a lot of things with SPAM. In her pantry there are all kinds of categories of SPAM.”
Matt also asked Matilda about Danita's pet peeves.
“Well, Danita has to have a cup of coffee in the morning. I don’t suggest you approach her too much before that cup of coffee."
